I'm interested to see what others here have to say on this subject. Drain it from the pan first, fill it with 1 quarts extra, then start the engine and drain from the trans cooler line out 1 quarts at a time. I think that visually it will look super-dark as compared to new fluid, but does that mean the fluid is no longer good? I don't know. IIRC, 2006 still have the dipstick, in which case you can drain most of the fluid through the trans cooler line 1 quarts at a time till about 12 quarts. Of course, you'd need to replenish what you drained in order to do this without compromising your transmission by running it with too little fluid. You can drain out a little fluid and have it tested. What are your opinions, fellow TN members? Adding equivalent amounts of new fluid at the same temperature should be safe, but I would probably take the extra steps to level the car and get the transmission temp to the proper range in order to confirm the proper fill amount using the overflow tube in the pan. So, doing it a few times (3?) over a couple of weeks should get most of the "old" fluid out, but at the expense of wasting some of the new fluid in the 2nd & 3rd drains. I've read that a simple drain only releases a few quarts of fluid. I'm considering doing it somewhere around 60k to 80k using the multiple drain and fill method. I've personally been going back and forth about whether or not to do it. Some of what I've read indicates that doing a drain and fill can be beneficial and that doing a "flush" can be risky. The transmission is serviceable, but not as simply as others. I've got to believe the the majority of folks follow Toyota's guideline of not messing with it. On the other hand, this transmission has been out for quite a few years and I don't read of a lot of problems with it. Logically, I have to admit that having clean fluid in there should make for a longer lasting transmission since it wouldn't be circulating as many contaminants by having fresh, clean fluid. Toyota's "lifetime" transmission fluid just makes me scratch my head. I have a '13 with considerably fewer miles (41,000) and have the same question. ![]() They do a complete flush with a flushing machine and recommend that service even though the manual does not say that. The dealer said they do not do a drain and fill. I think that visually it will look super-dark as compared to new fluid, but does that mean the fluid is no longer good? I don't know. My 04 V8 has 166,000 miles and has never had any transmission oil changes. ![]() ![]() Click to expand. You can drain out a little fluid and have it tested.
